Leaders agree—there’s a renewed focus on advancing data science capabilities in the energy sector as companies look to increase efficiencies, lower costs, and find innovative solutions to resource challenges. Experts at SPE and Spotfire explore more on this topic in a series of webinars, tech talks, and sessions.
AI and human expertise in oil and gas
The Society for Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a technical group of engineers, covering all aspects of the energy life cycle—exploration, geology & geophysics, reservoir characterization, drilling, completions, production, refining, and supply. They met with Spotfire to discuss the latest in how humans and AI can work together to unlock the future of oil and gas.
Alessandro Chimera, Sr. Principal Industry Analytics at Spotfire, states in the webinar, “The combination of human expertise and AI allows for smarter data science and machine learning at scale, addressing the unique challenges of the oil and gas industry. Geophysicists, for example, can leverage generative AI to process vast data sets at unprecedented speed, while still applying their domain expertise.”

Spotfire at ATCE 2024
Recently, Spotfire visited the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE), which attracts attendees from all around the globe—engineers, business leaders, equipment and software suppliers, students, and faculty—with a focus on data science and analytics.

This year’s conference featured current developments in equipment technologies for exploration and production, along with digital twins, data science, generative AI, and sustainability—marking ATCE’s 100th anniversary since its inception in 1924. With more than 150 exhibitors, 6,000 energy professionals, and 300 research papers submitted, ATCE is considered the leading technical energy conference and exhibition for global E&P professionals.
As a Gold Sponsor, Spotfire was excited to support the discussions around the future of petroleum exploration alongside key technologies like visual data science and generative AI.
Visual data science and AI for subsurface data
At ATCE 2024, Michael O’Connell, Chief Analytics Officer at Spotfire, spoke on the exciting work Spotfire is doing specifically in the energy industry as well as advancements in the Spotfire generative AI tool, Spotfire Copilot. Some exciting discussions were around the unique oil and gas visual data science applications—such as the Well Log Mod, 3D Combined Subsurface Mod, and Gun Barrel Mod for well spacing and infill analysis on the Spotfire Community.

O’Connell mentions, “What we’ve done with the creation of Spotfire Copilot is to make the creation of visuals and data science algorithms easier and faster. When you have a conversation with the Copilot, you can ask it to create visualizations, Python data science functions, interrogate your data, and so much more.”
