It was so great to visit the Spotfire Calgary Cult this week at Cadeon’s premier event, which had a jam-packed agenda and full house. Spotfire takes on Calgary’s energy challenges
I kicked off the event with the latest Spotfire® visual data science updates including:
- New Spotfire visualizations for Upstream Energy: Well Log Mod, Well Spacing “Gun Barrel” Diagram Mod, 3D Subsurface Mod (with lines, points, and multidimensional measures), among others.
- New Spotfire advanced geospatial analytics: Multilayer calculations for analyzing well, geology, and production data.
- Spotfire Copilot update: Visual data science methodologies, viz and code gen, latency and token optimization, ability to incorporate individual company documentation/data, and support for many LLMs/SLMs in cloud and on-premises.
- Visual Data Science updates to Spotfire NLP: Hugging face model embeddings as Document Properties, and Time Series including Dynamic Warping to borrow strength across wells for drilling and completions analyses.
- Spotfire Accelerators for Energy scenarios: Examples in exploration, appraisal, field development, drilling, completions, production, sustainability, refining, fuels, and HSE.
The engaged audience was fired up…discussions around Spofire’s unique interactive, no-code mark-filter-model-visualize-action UX for visual data science on all data, ad-hoc data, big data, federated/governed data, and extensible environment for tackling any data and analytics challenges.
Energy companies are optimizing these scenarios and working to improve upstream portfolio resilience—adapting to market fluctuations while investing in their best assets over short and long-term price horizons. Ryan Mross, Senior Data Analytics Specialist at Cadeon, showcased a super tour of the Cadeon instructor-led Spotfire training and Cadeon’s Oil and Gas Toolkit accelerator. Ryan emphasized the importance of making a small investment in training that can return big results for our customers and their Spotfire abilities.
The Cadeon Toolkit accelerator showcases common visualizations and metrics used by many Upstream Energy companies—providing tremendous insight into performance and where they fit amongst their peer group for production.

Spotfire Champions in Calgary
I met with many Spotfire champions and power users at the event, including a number of TAF hackathon winners. Something about the fresh Calgary mountain air…keeping people switched on, with channels open to discovery.
At the event, Spotfire champions and power users Paul Parzen from Jupiter/ Tara Energy Services and Shahbaz Singh from Arc Resources provided insights and highlights on their successful journey in using Spotfire in their organizations.
Spotfire in the Rockies
I had a great time visiting the Canadian Rockies while I was in Calgary. Phil Unger, Cadeon CEO, drove me in his McLaren up to Sulphur Mountain, Banff, for dinner. Since it was just past the summer solstice, the sun set at 10 PM!!
Some superb views in the rocky mountains, and buried inside is the home of ammonite fossils, early sea-life cephalopods from the Mesozoic era, 70+M years ago. Beautiful colors emerge when they catch the light.
