The current and future state of visual analytics
TAF 2023 kicked off with an electrifying general session covering hot topics and megatrends in visual analytics, artificial intelligence, and data science. In the opening session, analytics experts and thought leaders from around the world discuss the origin story, transformation, and future of these AI and visual data science capabilities.
Tobias Lehtipalo, VP of Product Management at Spotfire, kicked off TAF Day 1 exploring the origins of Spotfire and where we’re heading next. Lehtipalo said, “The idea for Spotfire came from research into dynamic interfaces. The goal was to give business users a fast, interactive, and visual way to explore large datasets without having to manually issue queries to databases. The amount of data and the importance of self-service analytics has grown since then, but the goal of Spotfire has remained the same: to give users the ability to ask and answer questions of their data at the speed of thought.”
Another expert speaker featured in this session—and main force for the TAF conference for the past 20 years—is Michael O’Connell, Chief Analytics Officer at Spotfire. When sharing his perspective on the current and future state of what’s to come for visual analytics, and specifically Spotfire technology, O’Connell stated: “It’s an exciting time right now in visual data science, analytics, and business intelligence with this incredible AI explosion we’ve had in these past few months.”
Headlining the event was Jan Willem Tulp, Founder of TULP interactive. He showcased several amazing projects with his unique custom visualizations and techniques. On creating custom visualizations, Tulp says “When I start a project, I don’t know yet what the end result will be. It’s really a discovery of what works and what doesn’t work. I want to get the characteristics of a dataset as quickly as possible…It’s an evolutionary process.”

Tips and tricks for analytics success
In an exciting customer breakout session, Jonathan Henderson, Co-Founder and Chief Analytics Officer at Enertel and winner of last year’s #TAFHACK, shares his winning approach to Spotfire technology, focusing on Mods, Data Functions, Geoanalytics, and R. Henderson explains how these powerful capabilities can be used to elevate your analytics game and gain valuable insights from your data, while also emphasizing that analytics is much more than just the numbers––and that great visual analytics start with great design.
While explaining design principles of high-impact visual analytics and how the success of your analytics relies on the aesthetics of your workflow, Henderson said “Ugly homes don’t have busy open houses and the same applies to your analytics and dashboard––users perceive more appealing designs, visually speaking, as easier to use and the reverse also holds true. A poor user experience can ruin an otherwise great design and user interface and design are a balancing act.”
